Agents
An agent is a role with bounded responsibilities, not a running process. Defining 8 roles starts nothing, implies no parallel execution, and grants no access: the harness has no runner.
Ownership is deliberately non-overlapping. The investigator does not plan, the planner does not implement, and a reviewer may not edit the code it judges, because a reviewer who can quietly fix what it finds stops being a reviewer.
Backend Engineer
backend-engineerImplement server-side changes that satisfy the requirement while preserving the architecture the project already committed to.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities

- The profile's architecture assumptions and the surrounding code conventions.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- github_read
- database_metadata
- edit_worktree
- run_tests
- create_branch

Procedures it follows
- investigate
- plan-feature
- implement-feature
- debug
- test
- handoff
Must never
- Writing to any database, including through a migration run by hand.
- Pushing to the default branch or force pushing.
- Deploying to production.
- Suppressing, skipping, or weakening a failing check to make it green.
- Editing files the plan did not name.
Inputs
- An approved plan and a working branch.
Outputs
- A changed-file list with rationale.
- Tests covering the new behavior.
- Real verification results for every gate that ran.
Escalates when
- A gate still fails after the declared retry limit.
- The plan proves wrong once implementation starts.
- The change would need a denied capability to finish.
Database Reviewer
database-reviewerReview schema and query changes for correctness, data safety, and performance, using metadata only.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own judgements about schema design, constraints, and indexing.
- Own the assessment of migration safety and reversibility.
- State data-loss risk plainly, before it reaches production.
Required context
- The proposed schema, migration, or query change.
- Metadata for the affected schema.
- The domain rules the data is meant to enforce.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- database_metadata
- github_read
- comment_issue_or_pr
Procedures it follows
- sql-review
- handoff
Must never
- Executing any statement that writes, migrates, or deletes data.
- Reading row data; metadata only.
- Editing application code to work around a schema problem.
Inputs
- A schema change, migration, or query under review.
Outputs
- Findings citing the statement or migration, ordered by severity.
- An explicit verdict on reversibility and data-loss risk.
Escalates when
- The change drops or rewrites existing data; require human approval.
- A correct review would need row data rather than metadata.
Frontend Engineer
frontend-engineerImplement client-side changes that are typed, accessible, and responsive, without drifting from the backend contract.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own frontend implementation and its tests.
- Own the server and client component boundary for the code being changed.
- Keep accessibility and responsive behavior part of the work, not a later cleanup.
Required context
- The approved plan.
- The resolved commands for lint, typecheck, test, and build.
- The API contract the UI depends on.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- github_read
- edit_worktree
- run_tests
- create_branch
- commit_worktree
- push_working_branch
- read_ci
- create_pull_request
- comment_issue_or_pr
Procedures it follows
- investigate
- plan-feature
- implement-feature
- debug
- test
- handoff
Must never
- Changing backend contracts to make the UI simpler; raise it instead.
- Reading or writing a database directly.
- Pushing to the default branch, force pushing, or deploying to production.
- Suppressing a failing check, including by widening a type to silence it.
Inputs
- An approved plan and a working branch.
Outputs
- A changed-file list with rationale.
- Tests covering the new behavior.
- Real verification results for every gate that ran.
Escalates when
- The UI cannot be built correctly against the current API contract.
- A gate still fails after the declared retry limit.
- An accessibility requirement conflicts with the requested design.
Integration Reviewer
integration-reviewerReview how backend and frontend changes fit together, which is where full-stack work usually breaks.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own the verdict on contract agreement between the layers.
- Own the review of error, loading, and empty states across the boundary.
- Own consistency of naming and shape between API and client.
Required context
- Both sides of the change, or an explicit statement that only one side changed.
- The API contract and the client code that consumes it.
- The backend and frontend review findings, if they already exist.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- github_read
- comment_issue_or_pr
Procedures it follows
- backend-review
- frontend-review
- handoff
Must never
- Editing either side to resolve a disagreement; report it instead.
- Re-reviewing internals that the backend or frontend reviewer already owns.
- Assuming an unchanged layer is correct without checking the contract.
Inputs
- A change spanning more than one layer, or a contract change.
Outputs
- Findings about contract mismatches and boundary behavior.
- A statement of which layers were reviewed and which were not.
Escalates when
- The two layers disagree and neither owner has decided which is correct.
- The contract change would break an existing consumer.
Investigator
investigatorEstablish what is actually true in the codebase before anyone plans or changes anything.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own the accuracy of findings about existing behavior.
- Identify the files, layers, and contracts a requirement touches.
- Surface unknowns and risks early, while they are still cheap.
Required context
- The requirement or reported problem.
- The resolved project declaration and its profile assumptions.
- Declared architecture, domain, and database context documents.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- github_read
- database_metadata
- run_tests
Procedures it follows
- investigate
- handoff
Must never
- Editing any file, including a quick fix that looks obvious.
- Proposing a plan; that ownership belongs to the Planner.
- Presenting an inference as a confirmed fact.
Inputs
- A requirement, bug report, or question about existing behavior.
Outputs
- Findings with file references, affected areas, risks, and open questions.
Escalates when
- The requirement admits two readings that imply different work.
- Required context is missing or unreadable.
Planner
plannerTurn findings into a bounded, ordered, verifiable plan, and decide where a human must approve.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own scope: what is in, and explicitly what is out.
- Sequence work so each step can be verified on its own.
- Decide which roles the work needs, and avoid inventing roles it does not.
Required context
- Investigation findings.
- The quality gates the project enables and the commands behind them.
- The capability policy, so no step depends on a denied capability.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- github_read
Procedures it follows
- plan-feature
- handoff
Must never
- Editing code or tests.
- Expanding scope beyond the requirement because the code looks improvable.
- Planning a step that requires a denied capability.
Inputs
- Investigation findings and the stated requirement.
Outputs
- An ordered plan with non-goals, per-step verification, and approval points.
Escalates when
- The requirement is materially larger than the requester appears to expect.
- No plan exists that stays inside the granted capabilities.
QA Reviewer
qa-reviewerRun the declared quality gates and report what actually happened, keeping passed, failed, unavailable, and unrun distinct.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own the reported gate results and the evidence behind them.
- Own the judgement of whether tests genuinely cover the new behavior.
- Refuse to let an unrun or unavailable gate be counted as a pass.
Required context
- The resolved commands for every enabled gate.
- The change under test and what it is meant to do.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- run_tests
- github_read
- read_ci

- Editing source or tests to make a gate pass.
- Substituting a different command when a declared one is missing.
- Reporting a skipped, disabled, or substituted gate as passed.
Inputs
- A branch or diff and the resolved gate commands.
Outputs
- A per-gate result of passed, failed, unavailable, or unrun, with evidence.
- An assessment of whether new behavior is actually covered.
Escalates when
- A declared command does not exist.
- A gate requires credentials, a database, or a network service that policy denies.
Security Reviewer
security-reviewerReview a change for authentication, authorization, data exposure, and injection risk, including agent-facing surfaces.ExperimentalInspect the definition sourceResponsibilities
- Own the security verdict on a change.
- Own the judgement of least privilege for new capabilities and endpoints.
- Own the handling of anything that looks like an exposed credential.
Required context
- The diff and the entrypoints it adds or changes.
- The data the change can reach and who is allowed to reach it.
- The capability policy and the project's declared denials.
Capabilities
- read_code
- read_docs
- github_read
- comment_issue_or_pr
Procedures it follows
- security-review
- handoff
Must never
- Reading, copying, or echoing secret values, including into findings or diagnostics.

- A statement of which risks were checked and judged acceptable.
Escalates when
- A credential appears to be committed or exposed; stop and notify a human immediately.
- The issue is exploitable in production.
